Byrne's Pub

Hi explorers, Hannah here to give you the low down on an Irish pub we found in Grandview!

With Saint Patrick’s Day just around the corner, we looked to the internet to give insight into the best Irish pubs in town. With quite a few highly rated choices, we ventured to Grandview to try out a dive bar that we had never heard of – Byrnes Pub, off of Northwest Boulevard.

Apparently, their Saint Patrick’s Day party is a two-day event you will want to attend! More info on the party is below!

The Vibes: With shamrocks on the building and even painted on the sidewalk out front, it’s easy to tell which building houses the pub. Connected by an adjoining wall, with a hole for pizza transportation to the pub, is Granddads Pizza- another Columbus-native business. With a small parking lot off the side, don’t be surprised if you have to find street parking on a busy night!

The dive bar first popped up in 1995 when three Irish brothers decided to create a genuinely Irish pub in Columbus. Since 1995, the interior has been refreshed with dark wooden ceilings and cushy leather seats. However, when visiting, one can see pictures covering the walls from the many years the pub has been a staple in Grandview.

The Byrnes brothers set their pub apart by making it feel like the visitor is transported to Dublin, Ireland. They boast of Celtic music many nights a month and have bluegrass nights as well – make sure you check out their upcoming shows on their website and Facebook!

The Drinks: With 12 beers on tap, including Guinness and Irish whiskey, out of the wazoo makes the Celtic vibes even more apparent. Make sure you ask about Bua Irish Whiskey, one of the owners made the whiskey brand themselves, and they sell it at the bar!

The Food: Of course, the pub serves the traditional bangers & mash, fish & chips, and shepherd’s pie. However, Byrne’s found a way to make their specials even more unique. In almost every category of food, they have at least one item that contains green chiles! I love green chiles, so they gave the perfect amount of flavor and slight heat to mix up the originals we love. For example… Josh ordered the shepherd’s pie, and we were intrigued by the dish as a whole. The meat was a pulled pork and veggie mixture with a hearty sauce that tasted of green chiles! They then put a hefty amount of mashed potatoes and broiled cheese on top! Even with the super unique flavor, we agreed it was one of the best shepherd’s pies we have had and would 100% order it again. Everything looked so good, but we tried not to eat ourselves into a coma. The sauerkraut balls were delish! The inside was extremely creamy – it reminded me of crab Rangoon creamy. They were served alongside a sauce that tasted slightly of wasabi. I am now determined to recreate that sauce; it was simply amazing. The chicken and dumplings were my main course, which did not disappoint. The dumplings were handmade and tasted like it! My only complaint was that some of the chicken was dry… but just push it into the light gravy over it all, and problem solved.

We completely expected easy pub food when we ate and were pleasantly surprised to have been blown away. We both agreed that we wouldn’t be upset going again.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Again, check out their Facebook, as this is the most updated source of information!

They have live bluegrass every Friday for the foreseeable future, along with other sporadic live shows. St. Patty’s Day won’t be back until another pass around the Sun, but don’t forget about their huge tent party every year!
