UPDATE: Trapper Johns is currently CLOSED. They are going through a transition and sale of the company. Hopefully we will see it opening up again under new ownership in the future.
We’ve been enjoying the summer sun while being near the water. Our latest favorite activity is kayaking at Trapper John’s Canoe Livery. Hannah took a group of friends here for my birthday last month, and we’ve been going back ever since.
The prices are some of the best you’ll find within a thirty-minute drive of the city. We always kayak with a group, but we’re looking forward to trying our hand at canoeing. On weekends, the prices go up, but if you love the experience, you can get a season pass or other rental options. If it’s your first time, we recommend doing the sampler trip, which is only about 1-2 hours and is pretty easygoing. However, if it hasn’t rained in a while, you might get stuck if you don’t avoid rocky areas.
Despite being near a road at times, you’ll feel at home with nature on the creek. Dragonflies are everywhere, and turtles bask in the sun on fallen branches. You can make pit stops along the way, so we always bring a small cooler with snacks for a swim break. There’s also a rope swing towards the middle of the trip, which is one of our favorite spots. Trapper John’s is dog-friendly, and they’re hugely accommodating. We recommend checking out the website before you visit for additional information.
If you’re nervous, put all electronics in a waterproof box or bag, or simply leave them in the car. Many cell phones end up falling in the water, and that’s not how you’d want to finish a great summer activity!
