Located in the historic Marconi Square building, the small shop already had a to-go window beside the small patio area. A few two-person tables are inside, but it’s not a restaurant-style sandwich shop. It’s a perfect drive-by (and by drive, I really mean walk) for nationwide arena goers. Be prepared to park in a parking garage or cross your fingers for one of the few street parking spots to come open. The building used to be the warehouse of Dean and Barry’s Paint Company and now houses office spaces to rent. However, the new owners renovated the space while keeping the charm of the historic building from the early 70s. The wooden floors remind you of an old basketball court, while the exposed ceilings have random neon lights lining the hallways. There are a few art pieces along the halls, as well as a nod to the old Dean and Barry’s warehouse. Two large hanging shelves are stocked with antique paint cans and samples that took my breath away.
The sandwich shop focuses on a small menu of five sandwiches, two potato sides, and a few desserts. The menu is the only thing small about these sandwiches. The sandwiches are stacked high with quality, local ingredients that are sure to fill you up. Most of the meats are cured and smoked in-house, while the seeded rolls come from a local Columbus bakery. The sandwiches vary in almost every way aside from their signature Wario’s sauce offered for many. For example, they have cold-cut and “Philly style” steak options. Then you can’t forget about their crusted chicken sandwich and, for veggie lovers, a falafel sandwich. Josh went for the chicken, and I opted for steak so we could each try the other’s sandwich. The crusted chicken sandwich was enormous, with four layers of chicken in addition to sauce and cheese. It had a slight herb flavor, and the chicken was crispy perfection, but Josh wished he had added their signature sauce for a little reprieve from all the bread and chicken. I ordered my steak sandwich, “Wario’s Way,” with two types of cheese and was not disappointed. After stuffing myself with the first half, I had to stop, but it was hard to put the other half down; it was so delicious. If you want to taste a few of their dishes while having a brew and sit inside, check out their sister store, which just opened within Jackie O’s! Before you visit either one, check their hours as they are closed a couple of days of the week and aren’t open very late. Happy exploring!
